At the Wild Rice Academy, we conduct drama classes for children! We empower our young students to experiment and make creative decisions in the ways they express themselves and tell stories. Guided by our experienced Teaching Artists, our goal is to help children learn about themselves and the world around them through theatre, story and performance.
Experiential, engaging and enjoyable, our weekly drama classes for kids focus on the development of every child’s confidence, creativity, intellect and social-emotional intelligence.
Through drama games, role-playing and performing on stage, children build confidence while learning key communication, language and literacy skills.
In a feature unique to our drama programme, your child will get to perform for a live audience in a performance showcase at the end of each term. This is the perfect opportunity for them to show off everything they have learnt and created with their friends!

About The Classes
FOR AGES 5 TO 8
In our classes for children from the ages of 5 to 8, our Teaching Artists will guide participants through storytelling, improvisation and role-playing exercises. We will also offer your child the opportunity to learn core language and social-emotional skills by introducing them to original stories and scripts written especially for these classes. Along the way, your child will learn to trust their own imagination and creativity.
Across the year, students will explore three original stories, each featuring a distinct character archetype. From animals and giants to robots and other imaginative characters, each archetype is thoughtfully chosen to encourage children to explore a different way of using their bodies, voices and imaginations. As they encounter different types of characters across the year, students are introduced to a range of acting skills – from transforming their physicality and vocal expression, to exploring character emotions, relationships and intentions. This gives children the opportunity to build on their skills progressively, while discovering that there are many different ways to create and bring a character to life.
Each story also explores meaningful social-emotional themes, giving students opportunities to develop language skills, understand different perspectives and build confidence in expressing themselves.
FOR AGES 9 TO 12
Our classes for children from the ages of 9 to 12 will have a greater focus on creativity, critical thinking and expression in performance. We empower participants to consider and make creative decisions while learning to use their bodies, voices and faces to better express and communicate their thoughts and ideas.
Across the year, students will explore three different genres of theatre: Fantasy, Comedy and Drama. Through Fantasy, they will discover the possibilities of storytelling through imaginary worlds, magic, and mythical creatures. Comedy invites them to explore amusing situations, comic characters and the art of entertaining an audience, while Drama focuses on using characters, dialogue and action to explore feelings, problems and relationships. Across all three genres, students will discover the key elements of storytelling like character, setting, conflict and theme.
As students work across these different genres, they will develop a range of theatre techniques that they can apply to their performances. The Academy is structured like a theatre troupe, giving students a taste of a professional theatre environment as they collaborate, make creative decisions and work together towards performance outcomes. Through this process, students grow as actors by developing their characterisation, physical and vocal expression, stage presence and ability to make thoughtful performance choices, while building the language, confidence and communication skills that support them beyond the stage.

Sign Your Child Up For 1, 2 or 3 Terms!
We recommend signing your child up for the full year of drama classes so that they can enjoy the complete Academy experience! We are happy to offer package discounts for booking all three terms at once.
However, if your schedule does not permit, please note that you can sign your child up for any number of terms across the year. Your child’s learning journey will not be compromised even if they do not attend the whole year of classes, as each term is self-contained and can stand alone.
